In this posting I share why and how I will enhance my lesson plans using these newly acquired resources. Enjoy and please feel free to add and share resources in the comments.

Component 1- Assessment Techniques

Classroom Assessment Techniques- Pro & Con Grid

This is a great resource that contains many useful informal assessment strategies. I feel that I need to use more informal assessment strategies in my classes so this a great reference guide. I will incorporate the Pro-Con Grid to encourage students to promote a more holistic understanding and deeper reflection of many important topics and issues that we discuss in class. I think this assessment tool will encourage students to be reflexive, holistic and culturally relative (which is important in anthropology). I feel this pro and con grid will be valuable in informally evaluating and encouraging students to self-evaluate their ability to understand complex topics of discussion.

Component 2- Characteristics of Adult Learners

Supporting Adult Online Learners

Feeling confident in the characteristics of adult learners, I sought out a resource to help me plan lessons to better support my online adult learners. I found this resource helpful in highlighting the strengths in adult learners and how we can use these to our advantage in lesson planning. This resource provided me with many great tips to encourage me to better engage and connect with my online learners. I now recognize that some things I do work well, such as making phone calls, but that I need to be more vigilant with timely feedback and informal online assessments such as quizzes. This resource will help me better connect with online learners.

Component 3- Motivational Techniques

17 Tips to Motivate Adult Learners

This website is a fantastic resource that includes comprehensive suggestions as to how we can better motivate adult learners both in class and online.  I printed this resource and placed it on my bulletin board to remind me to practice and implement these techniques. I will try some of these techniques, such as using more visuals to encourage learning and encouraging them to create more examples. This is a great resource for me to incorporate in my lessons and classrooms to enhance and create an engaging classroom.

I chose this resource as I am interested in creating an assignment that engages students in creating a wiki. This resource provides great information on how to create a wiki assignment, the learning value in them and references additional resources. From this resource I have step by step instructions on how to create a wiki assignment. From our course assignment and now this resource, I now have the skills and support to implement a wiki assignment for my students. I will use this recourse to incorporate the use of more media in my classes.

I am continually seeking a lesson planning template that works for me. This lesson planning resource (template 2 on this website) appears to be a great fit for me. I really like this template as it incorporates Bloom’s taxonomy and reminds me of how I need to encourage higher order thinking and other forms of learning such as kinesic learning styles. I tend to not engage my kinesic learners as much and continually strive to better meet their needs. I think this lesson plan template is a great resource to help me with my planning to better meet diverse learning styles.

Reflections on Trends and Roles Assignment….

NEW Insights….

Through reviewing these resources, I gained many new insights into the roles that adult educators play in student entitlement.

I reviewed 2 sources on our roles as adult educators on responding the students’ entitlement. I initially chose the Lippman, Bulanda & Wagennaar (2009) article features in Faculty Focus, but realized that Caley and I chose the same resource. I will reflect upon both the Lippman et al., (2009) and Holdcroft (2014) articles on the new insights I gained on the roles we play in student entitlement. Continue reading

Trends & Roles Assignment

For this assignment, Caley and I wanted to research more on student entitlement. As college instructors teaching first and second year university classes, we want to learn more about this trending phenomenon. Our interest in this topic comes from the following article: Dear Student; No, I Won’t Change the Grade you Deserve by Stacey Patton published on February 13, 2015.

We wanted to learn more about the trends behind student entitlement, does it exist? Do students’ and faculty have the same perspectives? How can we respond and be better prepared to work with students’ entitlement?

My partner for this project is my amazing Colleague and one of our brilliant faculty members at COTR, the fantastic Caley Ehnes, MA, PhD. If you have not met her, you are missing out. Check out her blog…Caley’s Blog!/
